TA-201E Total Organic Carbon Analyser

OVERVIEW

The TA-201E utilizes a high-temperature catalytic combustion oxidation technique to analyze carbon content in water samples. During measurement, the sample is introduced along with purified oxygen (as the carrier gas) into two separate pathways: a high-temperature combustion tube and a low-temperature reaction chamber. In the high-temperature combustion tube, organic and inorganic carbon compounds are oxidized into CO₂ via catalytic combustion. In the low-temperature reaction pathway, acidification of the sample breaks down inorganic carbon, converting it into CO₂. The carbon dioxide generated from both processes is then sequentially carried by the gas stream into a non-dispersive infrared (NDIR) detector for quantification. This allows for independent measurement of Total Carbon (TC) and Inorganic Carbon (IC), with Total Organic Carbon (TOC) calculated by subtracting IC from TC:

  • The non-dispersive infrared (NDIR) detector offers excellent linearity and sensitivity in CO₂ detection. The resulting CO₂ signal is converted into a peak curve, and TOC is calculated internally as the difference between TC and IC.

  • The combustion process at 680°C ensures complete oxidation of nearly all organic substances while staying below the melting point of most salts, which helps extend the lifespan of the catalyst and combustion tube—especially beneficial for salt-containing samples.
